Rise of the 10x Engineer

There’s a unicorn engineer at each company. One that would out ship all other engineers. One that can jump into an incident channel, find the bug within a minute and resolve the issue. The engineer all managers wanted on their teams and everyone else wanted to be. To be clear the term 10x doesn’t literally mean 10 times the output (as we shouldn’t measure productivity purely by output) but 10 times the impact. Not something to measure but a theoretical concept. Because the 10x engineer has all the tribal knowledge and context on the system design, they are 1 step ahead of everyone else and thus are able to out perform their peers.

I believe with AI coding agents, any product engineer can become a “10x engineer” when compared to the 2024 version of themselves. When I reflect on the software engineering role before AI, most of my development time was spent on deep dives and investigations. Majority of this including reading code and design docs, speaking to engineers on other teams. I needed to build context on data models, interactions between services, and understand the upstream and downstream effects before I can plan my changes. While AI doesn’t solve everything, it sure helps reduce the investigation time by parsing the code and generating a plan and implementing changes. And its ability is improving every month. (At larger companies, there would be more time spent on discussing the changes across team but armed with the right context from LLMs I expect discussions to be simpler). Now that the average engineer has the same tribal knowledge and system design context from AI coding agents, their impact can be compared to the 10x engineer from pre-2024.

So what will the 10x engineer of post-2026 look like? I think it’s the engineer that can quickly solve the pain points and problems of their users and iterate quickly. Whether that is orchestrating multiple agents or running a Ralph-Wiggum loop. As long as they can deliver what the user wants, that’s the 10x engineer everyone wants.
